Manson Place Residence

Manson Place is a residence with apartments, each with a fully fitted kitchen and bathroom(s). It is situated by the South Kensington and Gloucester Road amenities; Manson Place is 10-minute walk from Foundation House, and a short walk from The Natural History Museum. Each apartment has a lounge/dining area with TV, in addition to wireless internet access.

Please note that bedrooms do not include desks like those commonly found in American dormitories. While it may be an initial adjustment, students find ample space to study in their bedrooms, in the study room, at the library, at a nearby coffee shop, or in the computer lab in Metrogate which is open 24 hours a day. 

South Kensington Area

FIE study and housing facilities are located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, one of London’s most desirable areas.

  • FIE is located near schools such as Imperial College, the Royal College of Art, and the Royal College of Music.
  • Just down the street are some of the world’s great cultural institutions, including the Royal Albert Hall, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Natural History Museum.
  • Kensington is home to charming residential areas where famous residents of the present (Madonna, Hugh Grant, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise) mix with the ghosts of those who lived in the area in the past (T.S. Eliot, J.S. Mill and Beatrix Potter). 
  • Students live and study near some of London’s most fashionable streets, including Gloucester Road, where students will find banks, a post office, pubs, restaurants, and grocery stores; and High Street Kensington, one of London’s premier shopping streets.
Accessing the Rest of the City

Getting to the rest of the city is easy and convenient. The area is served by a number of underground (tube) and bus routes, opening up the whole city to the curious visitor.  Foundation House is located near the corner of Gloucester and Cromwell Roads, at the Gloucester Road tube stop.  From here, students have instant access to the Piccadilly, Circle and District Tube lines. 

The Manson Place residence is about a 10-minute walk from Foundation House, the main academic and administrative building for FIE.  Gloucester Road and South Kensington are the closest Tube stations, found at the intersection of Gloucester Road and Cromwell Road. Students can take the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines from this station. Please see the transportation section of this website for more information.

Laundry

There are laundry facilities located in the basement of the Manson Place Residence Hall.  There are also ironing boards available in the apartments.  Students must provide their own detergent.


Computer Access

There is a computer lab in the basement of Metrogate that is shared with the three other FIE residences, Manson Place, 123 Queen’s Gate, and Hyde Park Gate. This computer lab contains roughly 25 desktop PCs with hard-wired Ethernet connections, two laser printers, and a scanner. Students may use wireless printing at a quota of 50 pages for free, and pay 5 pence per page thereafter.

Mail & Packages

Participants may have items shipped to London (including textbooks).  When mailing items, please use the following mailing address for all FIE students and note on the customs label 'Temporary admission of student visitor effects':
