Upon arrival in Costa Rica, N.U.in students are taken to a retreat center, where they participate in a three-day, two-night orientation organized and run by ICDS. This orientation includes informational sessions, ice breakers, games, and a field trip! Orientation sessions give participants an introduction to Costa Rican culture, a Spanish survival guide, and discussions about living with a host family, culture shock, safety in Costa Rica, and ICDS and N.U.in policies. After visiting a volcano on the third day of orientation, students are accompanied to their accommodations and introduced to their host families, with whom they will reside for the remainder of the semester.

The following morning, participants are escorted to ULatina by a member of their homestay family for an academic orientation. Students are then given a tour of the campus, their course schedules, information about available resources, and an introduction to being a Costa Rican college student.
