Spiral Series – Exhibit at Newbury Street Art Gallery by Northeastern Curator of Visual Resources

Mary_HughesThe art work of Mary Hughes, Curator of Visual Resources for the Department of Art + Design and the School of Architecture at Northeastern is currently on display at the Copley Society of art and continues through July 18.

In the exhibition, Spiral Series, Hughes expands her exploration of form and line in drawings and works on panel. By layering a series of stenciled circles, Hughes transforms rigid, geometric shapes into graceful, organic formations that mimic natural elements and have a sense of space and atmosphere. Hughes also explores the relationship between the flatness of the picture plane and the illusion of spatial depth. Her minimal, abstract works captivate the viewer with their delicate detail and intricate weaving of shape and line.

Hughes has exhibited in solo and group shows throughout New England and has received several awards and fellowships including the Fulbright Scholarship and the Anderson Ranch Residency. Hughes's studio is located in the historical Fenway Studios in Boston, MA.

The Copley Society of art, Co|So, is located on 158 Newbury Street, Boston, and is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm.
