Cities as far-​​flung as Oak­land, Cal­i­fornia, and Oulu, Fin­land, will soon be part of sep­a­rate basic income exper­i­ments. But a uni­versal basic income pro­gram is unlikely to become a reality in the U.S., says applied micro­eco­nomics expert Mindy Marks, who notes that such an ini­tia­tive would be too costly and poten­tially sub­ject to abuse.
