Jack Gri­nold, Northeastern’s leg­endary sports infor­ma­tion director, says watching the heavy­weight champ’s training ses­sions at Matthews Arena in 1964 “were some of the most delightful after­noons I’ve ever spent.” In 1994, Ali received an hon­orary doc­torate of public ser­vice from North­eastern.
