Northeastern men’s basketball guard Chaisson Allen’s half-court buzzer beater against Wright State at Matthews Arena last Saturday has racked up more than 50,000 hits on YouTube, the popular video-sharing Web site.
With the game tied, 67-67, in the waning seconds, Allen grabbed a rebound at the opposite end of the court, dribbled to the Northeastern logo, and flung the ball into the hoop as time expired, giving the Huskies a 70-67 win.
ESPN college basketball analyst Andy Katz named Allen’s half-court heave the "Shot of the Week" in his Weekly Watch Column, and SportsCenter, ESPN’s popular daily sports and news show, featured the shot during one of its broadcasts on Sunday.
Local news channels WCVB and FOX 25 replayed Allen’s highlight reel shot over the weekend, and Northeastern’s athletics department posted Allen’s game-winner on both its Twitter and Facebook pages.
“Any national recognition we can get as a team is great,” said Allen, who was named Northeastern’s Student-Athlete of the Week. “As the ball started getting closer to the hoop, I felt like it had a great chance of going in.”
Allen was mobbed by his teammates as fans expressed disbelief that his 50-foot prayer was answered.
“The shot has generated a lot of interest,” said associate athletics director George Gardner. “And the fact that the players bowled over our mascot as they rushed the court has got a lot of people talking,” he added with a laugh.
Athletics director Peter Roby said, “All of the folks in the athletics marketing group did such a wonderful job of using technology to get the word out and get people excited about this.”
