The White House threw its sup­port behind sev­eral gun-​​control mea­sures Tuesday, including requiring back­ground checks at gun shows and for other pri­vate sales—ideas likely to face stiff oppo­si­tion from most con­gres­sional Repub­li­cans and the pow­erful gun lobby.

Pres­i­dent Barack Obama also wants to renew the expired ban on assault weapons and con­sider limits on high-​​capacity ammu­ni­tion mag­a­zines, said his spokesman, Jay Carney.

Com­bined with signs of interest among some Repub­li­cans in taking up gun reg­u­la­tions, the devel­op­ments pro­vided more evi­dence that the shoot­ings at the Sandy Hook Ele­men­tary School in Con­necticut last week have, at least for a time, cre­ated momentum for a review of gun laws.
