Summer jobs for teenagers are increasingly hard to find. Only 3 out of every 10 teenagers held a full– or part-time job in July of 2011. In 1989, that rate was nearly twice as high: nearly 6 of every 10 teenagers from 16 to 19 years old held jobs, and even in July of 2005, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that more than half of 16– to 19-year-olds were employed.
