The Hunt­ington Avenue YMCA’s brick and iron facade and its familiar rooftop sign near Sym­phony Hall will remain unchanged.

But simul­ta­neous projects totaling more than $100 mil­lion by the YMCA of Greater Boston and North­eastern Uni­ver­sity are about to trans­form the land­scape on that sec­tion of Hunt­ington Avenue. As the YMCA updates its facil­i­ties, the university’s new 17-​​story res­i­dence hall is under con­struc­tion behind the his­toric Y building.

Changes to the 100-​​year-​​old Y will include a $30 mil­lion ren­o­va­tion of the 67,225-square-foot facility, making it more flex­ible, and energy effi­cient while pre­serving much of its his­toric char­acter. The project commenced …
