Former Mass­a­chu­setts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, Demo­c­ratic pres­i­den­tial nom­inee in 1988, believes abo­li­tion of the Elec­toral Col­lege and direct elec­tion of the pres­i­dent and vice pres­i­dent by pop­ular vote would do away with the “dis­pro­por­tionate influ­ence” of six to nine swing states that have deter­mined recent pres­i­den­tial contests.
