The annual Big Dog 5K, a popular event organized by the Office of Alumni Relations, will return next month for a sixth year. It will take place on a new course that will allow many more participants to sign up than in years past.
All runners and walkers are invited to take part in this fun run, which is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 17, in Dedham during Homecoming Weekend. The 5K will start at 10:15 a.m. at Riverdale Park on Riverside Drive and end at Northeastern’s Dedham campus at 370 Common St. The final portion of the 3.1-mile course will take participants around the Dedham campus’ track.
“We are thrilled to build on our existing partnership with the Dedham community by bringing the Big Dog 5K to a new course that highlights the recently-renovated track and field facility at the Dedham campus,” said Jack Moynihan, vice president of alumni relations and the Northeastern Fund. “We hope everyone—alumni, students, families, and Dedham residents—will enjoy the spirit of camaraderie and competition that the Big Dog brings each and every year.”
For the last five years, the run was held on the Esplanade, which limited the number of participants. Amy Belmore, director of signature events in the Office of Alumni Relations, said the run has sold out every year. Last year, 500 people finished the race.
“We knew there was a great demand and this new point-to-point course allows us to have no limit on the field size,” Belmore explained. “You never want to have to turn someone away from a fun run.”
In the finishing area there will be an awards ceremony, refreshments, and a kids’ zone.
To register or learn more about the race, visit www.alumni.northeastern.edu/bigdog. The entry fee is $17 for Northeastern students and Dedham residents, $20 for the general public, and $10 for children 12 years old and under. The first 500 registrants will get a free race T-shirt. After Nov. 10, the registration rates increase by $3. There will also be race-day registration from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.
