December 12, 2012 — Senior mechan­ical engi­neering stu­dents Charles O’Connell, David Stone, Andrew Edgerly, Charles Sidoti and Joseph Aaron dis­play their instru­ment for securing hernia mesh, one of two win­ning designs in the semester’s Mechan­ical and Indus­trial Engi­neering Cap­stone projects. The reusable device, which implants helical screws to hold sur­gical mesh in place, uses a novel rotary drive (pic­tured) to pro­vide tac­tile feed­back to sur­geons per­forming laparo­scopic surgery.
