Winning streaks will be on the line and rivalries will be renewed this weekend as the Huskies face off in several key matchups at home and on the road.
The women’s volleyball team (12–3) has won 12 consecutive home matches dating back to last season — the longest streak in program history — and hopes to continue that trend when it faces UNC Wilmington at Solomon Court on Friday at 7 p.m. The Huskies are 12–0 all-time against UNCW, with all of those wins coming since Northeastern joined the Colonial Athletic Association Conference in 2005.
The team then continues league play on Sunday, hosting William & Mary for a 1 p.m. match.
Fans of the volleyball team should have extra incentive to cheer on the Huskies this weekend: Friday night is Residence Hall Night at the Solomon Court. The residence hall floor that brings the most representatives wins free movie tickets.
The No. 9 Northeastern women’s field hockey team (7–2) opens up a four-game road trip at James Madison on Friday night at 7 p.m. Forward Crystal Poland leads the CAA with 14 goals, the fourth-most in the nation.
Head coach Cheryl Murtagh, who was recently honored as a part of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame, attributed the team’s strong start to its senior leadership.
“They’ve been just such a great leadership group,” Murtagh said. “I didn’t know how eight seniors would be together, but they help each other out. They’ve been outstanding.”
Meanwhile, the men’s soccer team (5–1-1) closes out its nonconference schedule on the road against Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Huskies are fresh off a 5–2 victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday at Parsons Field, a game in which the red and black overcame an early deficit with help from a hat trick by senior forward Don Anding. His three-goal outburst was the first time a Husky netted as many goals in a game since Petter Starnas did in 2001.
The women’s hockey team also hits the ice this weekend, with an exhibition game against the Boston Blades at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Matthews Arena. The team will then open regular-season play Friday, Oct. 7 at Colgate.
