Two Northeastern Undergraduate researchers named 2007 Goldwater Scholar
Physics major Matthew Bouchard, a Gordon-CenSSIS Scholar, and Jeffrey Patenaude, a mechanical engineering student, were selected for prestigious Goldwater Scholarships. Chosen from among 1,100 applicants nationwide in the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering, Goldwater Scholars are selected on the basis of their academic merit. Bouchard’s research while at Northeastern has included novel applications of non- to minimally-invasive biomedical imaging techniques and interdisciplinary projects on tissue engineering and in vitro fertilization. Patenaude, who has done research in the IGERT Nanomedicine program, is focused on utilizing nanotechnology to detect cancer on the cellular level.
Both PhD-bound students will benefit from not only the cash award of up to $7,500, but the recognition that comes with the scholarship. In the two decades of the prize’s existence, Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 69 Rhodes Scholarships and numerous other distinguished fellowships.
