Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global, experiential, research university built on a tradition of engagement with the world, creating a distinctive approach to education and research. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools, and select advanced degrees at graduate campuses in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Seattle.
Admission to Northeastern’s undergraduate program is highly competitive. Our goal is to build a diverse community of intellectually curious, mature, and highly motivated students who are a good match for our distinctive educational experience. Toward that end, we are committed to working with families to make a Northeastern education affordable to every student.
Northeastern's tradition of global engagement empowers our undergraduates to chart their own academic path, through more than 90 majors and concentrations and global experiential learning opportunities in 92 countries. That same tradition of engagement ensures that we offer graduate programs aligned with the emerging industries of the 21st century. Our 158 graduate programs integrate the highest levels of scholarship and research.
Experiential learning, anchored by our renowned cooperative education program, lies at the heart of academic life at Northeastern. The integration of study and professional experience enables students to put ideas into action, through work, research, international study, and service, in 92 countries around the world. This makes a Northeastern education transformative, with countless opportunities for students to explore their path, discover their passion, and grow intellectually.
As a university where teaching and research are grounded in global engagement, Northeastern’s impact is being felt in all corners of the world. Our faculty collaborate with colleagues on campus and on the other side of the world to pursue interdisciplinary research that turns discoveries into practical solutions, with a focus on global challenges in health, security, and sustainability. Our alumni, prepared by Northeastern to be engaged citizens of the world before they graduate, are making a difference in 145 countries around the globe.
Northeastern's faculty scholars pursue use-inspired, interdisciplinary research with a focus on discovering solutions to global challenges in health, security, and sustainability. Our advances in cybersecurity, drug discovery and delivery, healthcare delivery and policy, infrastructure resilience, and urban sustainability are characterized by global collaborations with industry, government, and other academic institutions. The university is home to more than 30 federally funded research centers.
Advancing a new model of higher education that moves beyond the traditional boundaries of place, Northeastern is developing a system of graduate campuses in selected metropolitan centers. The first, in Charlotte, North Carolina, launched in October 2011. Northeastern opened a second graduate campus in Seattle, Washington, in January. These academic hubs offer graduate degrees aligned with their regions' educational, workforce, and economic development needs.
Northeastern is home to a vibrant and competitive athletic program, including 18 varsity sports at the Division I level, 43 club sports, and 32 intramural sports. Athletics at Northeastern promotes leadership, teamwork, outstanding academic and athletic achievement and student engagement with the life of the university and the larger community.
