ABSTRACT: The projectively stable category can be embedded into the functor category using a well known result established by Hilton and Rees regarding natural maps between extension functors. It is natural to ask when this embedding admits an adjoint. This talk will explain certain conditions under which such an adjoint exists. In particular, it will be shown that if the stable category is abelian, then an adjoint to this embedding exists and is closely tied to the defect of a finitely presented functor. A generalization of the defect will also be introduced and certain properties of the original defect introduced by Auslander will be explained using the more general defect.
