Artin Groups and Arrangements of Hypersurfaces

ABSTRACT:  The Artin groups are certain finitely presented groups associated to a labeled simplicial graph. The generators correspond to the vertices and the relations to the labeled edges. These relations are those satisfied in the local fundamental group of a plane curve singularity of cuspidal type. It seems thus natural to inquire whether the Artin groups are fundamental groups of complements to projective plane curves. We address this question in the talk making use of group invariants of Alexander type.
