Polynomial Approximations of Functors
ABSTRACT: Work
of Tom Goodwillie shows how to associate a sequence of functors to a
homotopy functor of topological spaces that, when suitably interpreted,
behaves like a sequence of Taylor polynomial approximations to the
functor. This talk will focus on a version of this theory that can be
applied to functors of abelian categories. In particular, I will
describe what it means to be a degree n approximation to a functor in
this setting, and how such approximations are constructed. I will
discuss these approximations for some examples such as exterior and
symmetric power functors. This is joint work with Randy McCarthy.
