ABSTRACT: We study torsion theories in abelian, triangulated and stable categories (that is, abelian categories modulo a subcategory). A common setting is given by the notion of a pretriangulated category. We discuss connections with tilting theory, pairs of contravariantly and covariantly finite subcategories, closed model structures, and (co)homology theories.
