Noncommutative Projective Geometry: Strange Surfaces

Friday, October 4, 10:30 - 11:30 AM 511 Lake Hall

Abstracts of the Lectures

Noncommutative Projective Geometry. In recent years a surprising number of significant insights and results in noncommutative algebra have been obtained by using the global techniques of projective algebraic geometry. This talk will provide an introduction to these ideas and results.

Noncommutative Projective Geometry: Strange Surfaces. I will report on recent work with Dennis Keeler and Daniel Rogalski which produces some weird and wonderful ``noncommutative surfaces'' (or positively graded rings with the dimension of the graded pieces growing quadratically). As we will show, if you are careless with the idea of noncommutative ``blowing-up'' you get much more interesting results than if you do it properly.
