Using synchrony to connect the dots

In a complex, interconnected and increasingly perturbed world, understanding patterns of synchronized variation across distinct populations is critical for both understanding and preserving fragile ecosystems. However, traditional statistical methods are ill-suited for identifying such synchronized phenomena.

In a paper published in Methods in Ecology and Evolution, Assistance Professor Tarik Gouhier and colleague Frederic Guichard review the concept of synchrony and describe their new statistical package, aptly named ‘synchrony’, which facilitates its analysis in spatially- and temporally-resolved datasets. The statistical package for the R programming environment was released under the GPL2 open source license.
