Annual Open House

Saturday, October 4th from 10am to 3pm
THE EVENT WILL PROCEED AS PLANNED – WE WILL BE HOLDING THE EVENT ON SATURDAY AS ONLY LIGHT RAIN IS FORECAST FOR THE MORNING/EARLY AFTERNOON – SO┬áPLEASE DRESS ACCORDINGLY!

The event is free and open to the public. There will be activities for all ages. Scouts and other youth groups are most welcome!

A shuttle bus (56 passenger capacity) will be shuttling students from main canpus to the MSC. Space is limited, and seats will be first-come, first-served, and operating on the following schedule:

  • Depart Forsyth Circle at 9:30am and return at 1:30pm
  • Depart Forsyth Circle at 11:30am and return at 3:00pm

Some of the activities you can look forward to:

  • Tour the recently renovated Edwards Building, including research labs
  • Step into an underwater habitat and experience Mission 31
  • Visit the new greenhouse and tank farms
  • Complete a fieldwork obstacle course
  • Visit the touch tanks
  • Crawl through a fishing net
  • See what the SCUBA divers can collect at sea
  • Learn about the Ocean Genome Legacy and how DNA is extracted
  • Explore how Antarctic icefish survive without hemoglobin
  • Design a food web
  • Tour historic East Point, including its unique geology
  • Touch a lobster…or is it a robot?
  • Visit the solar observatory
  • Learn about what some of our neighbors and colleagues are doing to protect the environment
