Faculty members at the MSC maintain highly productive research laboratories:
- Exploring the ecology and evolution of marine communities, in particular the role of species interactions in shaping communities within the Gulf of Maine's rocky shores and estuaries
- Developing neurotechnology based on the neurophysiology and behavior of animal models, specifically building autonomous robots with high maneuverability that can meet diverse performance standards in varying marine environments
- Evaluating linkages between marine communities and ecosystems, particularly the causes and consequences of biodiversity change and the relative importance of the effect that consumers have on the growth and diversity of primary producers
- Studying historical and contemporary mammals in Massachusetts to expand knowledge of mammal feeding habits, growth, development, and disease
- Probing the diversity and complexity of microbial life in oceans, soils, and human body
- Examining the evolutionary ecology of Caribbean reef-corals, specifically how evolution shapes the genetic architecture of coral populations and how their immune systems fight pathogens such as those causing white band disease
- Examining the role that seaweed blooms play in transferring toxic pollutants like PCBs up food chains and whether they increase the bioavailability of pollutants to top-level predatory fish species consumed by humans
