beach by bluefish Aug. 29, 1978. Also taken by Louis Agassiz in 1860’s.

Schroeder (1953:502) There are two specimens at the MCZ (MCZ 12655, 560 and

atlanticus (Jordan and Evermann)- Sea Snail. Found in large tide pools and taken in algae with
poison and slurp tube. Also taken by Louis Agassiz in 1861 (MCZ 12944).

Aug. 22, 1978.

tomcod. (Walbaum) – Atlantic tomcod. Poisoned near shore in 1968 & 1969. Several MCZ
specimens (MCZ 12321, 24061-2) taken by Louis Agassiz 1858-1863.

chuss (Walbaum) – Red or squirrel hake. Taken with otter trawl at 15m in beds of seaweed west
of Nahant Aug. 1973. Reported from Lynn-Saugus Harbor by Chesmore et al. (1972:17).

specimen (107mm SL) trawled off Little Nahant Beach, Aug. 20, 1981.

aculeatus (Linneaus) – Three-spine stickleback. The most common tide pool stickleback at Nahant. Also
common in eel grass at low tide behind pharmacy. Several collections made by
Louis Agassiz in the 1860’s.

wheatlandi (Putnam)- Black- spotted stickleback. High tide pools. Described from a specimen collected
by Richard A. Wheatland at Nahant on April 15, 1859. One taken with a large
collection of G. aculeatus on the sand flats behind the Pharmacy, Aug. 1978.

pungitius (Linneaus) – Nine-spine stickleback. Taken in tide pools Aug. 1968. Two MCZ collections
(6753, 6782) made by Louis Agassiz 1853-1863.

quadracus (Mitchell)- Four-spine stickleback. Taken in patches of eelgrass at low tide on the sand
flats behind the Pharmacy on Aug. 24, 1978 and seined in Bear Pond. Also
collected by Louis Agassiz in the 1860’s.
Labridae- Wrasses
•Tautogolabrus
adspersus (Walbaum) – Cunner. Most abundant species of fish arouns Nahant,
especially near rocks. Feed primarily on mussels, barnacles, tunicates and small
green sea urchins (Chao, 1973).
•Tautoga
onitis (Linnaeus) – Tautog. Adult taken by Louis Agassiz in the 1880’s (MCZ
25482). Also taken in Swampscott in 1860 (MCZ 14382, 14383). An adult seen over
the rocks off Canoe Beach in 3m of water Aug. 18, 1974. Large adult caught on
hook and line off Pumphouse Beach Aug. 1975.
Lamnidae - Mackerel sharks
•Lamna
nasus (bonnaterre) - Porbeagle. A 37in specimen was taken at Nahant in 1854 by L.
Agassiz. It is illustrated in Bigelow & Shroeder (1953:21, fig. 5). A mature
male about 2m long was taken in a gill net by Paul Roy off Graved Light Aug.
30, 1979.
•Charcharadon
carcharias (Linneaus) – Great white shark. Bigelow & Schroeder (1953:26) examined a specimen
that was netted in Swampscott and reported that ten were captured or harpooned
and lost in Massachusetts Bay from 1935-1948.
•Cetorhinus
maximus (Gunnerus) – Basking shark. A juvenile female (385sm TL) was taken between
Swampscott and Little Nahant by Gordon and Bill Nichols on Aug. 20, 1979.
Another one taken off Nahant Aug. 6, 1980.
Lophiidae – Anglerfishes
•Lophius
americanus Valenciennes – Goosefish. Adult (960mm TL) taken at 10m Sept. 9, 1979. Veil of
developing eggs found on Little Nahant Beach Aug. 1971. Skull and jaw bones
found on Pumphouse Beach Aug. 1976.
Merlucciidae – Hakes
•Merluccius
bilinearis (Mitchill) – Silver hake. Hook and line off East Point in June and July, 1980.
Juvenile taken with trawl in Broad Sound in Aug. 1976.
Monocanthidae – Filefishes
•Monocanthus
hispidus (Linneaus) – Planehead filefish. Bigelow & Schroeder (1953:523) reported that odd
specimens of this filefish had been reported from Lynn and Nahant.
Odontaspididae – Sand tiger sharks
•Odontaspis taurus
(Rafinesque) – Sand tiger shark. A juvenile male (MCZ 402, 1070,TL) was collected at
Nahant by G.A. Shaw & A. Agassiz prior to 1864. Bigelow and Schroeder
(1953:19) reported it from Lynn.
Osmeridae – Smelts
•Osmerus modax
(Mitchill) – Rainbow smelt. Reported
from Lynn-Saugus Harbor by Chesmore et al. (1972:17)

saxatilis (Walbaum) – Striped bass. Reported
from Lynn-Saugus Harbor by Chesmore et al. (1972:17)
Petromyzontidae – Lampreys
•Petromyzon
marinus (Linneaus) – Sea lamprey. One
adult taken in Swampscott in 1869 (MCZ 41007).
Pholidae – Gunnels
•Pholis
gunnellus (Linneaus) – Rock gunnel. Common under rocks along shore and in tide pools,
taken with poison. Several MCZ collections taken by Louis Agassiz in early
1860’s.
Pleuronectidae – Righteye flounders
•Pseudopleuronectes
americanus (Walbaum) – Winter flounder. Common over sandy bottom on both beaches to at least
20m. Several MCZ collerctions made by Louis Agassiz 1858-1863.
•Limanda
ferrundinea (Storer) – Yellowtail flounder. Found in deeper water than Pseudopleuronectes
americanus, 20-25m in Nahant Bay with otter trawl Aug. 1973. Also taken by
Louis Agassiz in the 1860’s (MCZ 25483).
Pomatomidae – Bluefish
•Pomatomus
saltatrix (Linneaus) – Bluefish. Schools near shore along Short Beach Aug. 1973; a 640mm
specimen washed onshore on beach. Adults drove menhaden onto shore in spring
1975 and Aug. 29, 1978 when 15 were taken on hook and line.
Rajidae – Skates
•Raja
erinacea (Mitchill) – Little skate. One found stranded on Little Nahant Beach Aug. 1971.
Several taken by hand while scuba diving Aug. 1977. Several collected by Louis
Agassiz in 1860’s.
•Raja
radiata (Donovan) – Thorny skate. Several specimens were taken at Nahant by L. Agassiz
in 1862-66. These specimens served as the typed for Raja scabrata Garman which
is a junior synonym of R. radiata. No recent records.
•Raja
ocellata (Mitchill) – Winter skate. Nine specimens (545-880mm TL) were taken by L. Agassiz
at Nahant in 1862. Reported from Lynn-Saugus Harbor, 1968-1969 by Chesmore et
al.
(1972:17)
•Raja
laevis (Mitchill) – Barndoor skate. Several specimens were collected by L. Agassiz in 1862
at Nahant, of which one female (122cm TL) is still extant (MCZ 1138). No recent
records.
Sciaenidae – drums
•Cynoscion
regalis (Bloch and Schneider) – Weakfish. Adult taken by fisherman in June 1,1974. According to
Bigelow and Schroeder (1953:421) 369lbs. were landed at Nahant in 1906.
•Menticirrhus
saxatilis (Bloch and Schneider) - Northern kingfish. There
is one record for Lynn in 1840 (Bigelow & Schroeder, 1953:425).
Scombridae – Mackerels and Tunas
•Scomber scombrus
(Linneaus) – Atlantic mackerel. Periodically common near shore. Taken with hook and
line. One juvenile taken with seine on Canoe Beach Aug. 29, 1978.
•Sarda
sarda (Bloch) – Atlantic bonito. One
(257mm fork length, MCZ 17080) taken by Louis Agassiz at Nahant in 1883.
•Scomberomorus
maculatus (Mitchill) – Spanish macherel. There
is one record from Lynn according to Bigelow and Schroeder (1953:346).
Serranidae – Sea bass
•Centropristis
striata (Linneaus) – Black sea bass. Taken with hook and line and in lobster traps, summer
1973. One collected during a night dive off Canoe Beach June 1983.
Soleidae – Soles
•Trinectes
maculatus (Bloch and Schneider) – Hogchoker. Bigelow
and Schroeder (1953:297) reported one taken at Nahant in 1850.
Sphyrnidae – Hammerhead sharks
•Sphyrna zygaena
(Linneaus) – Smooth hammerhead. A juveline female (MCZ 1159, 685mm TL) was taken at
Nahant by L. Agassiz. This specimen was figured by Bigelow and Schroeder
(1953:45, fig. 16).
Squalidae – Dogfish sharks
•Squalus
acanthias (Linneaus) – Spiny dogfish shark. A female taken with hook and line in Aug. 1967 had 6
pups (203-212mm TL). Also collected by L. Agassiz at Nahant.
Stichaeidae – Pricklebacks
•Ulvaria
subbifurcata (Storer) - Radiated
shanny. In pools and under rocks down to 10m. Taken with
poison. Nahant is the type-locality of this species.
•Stichaeus
puctatus (Fabricius) – Arctic shanny. One juvenile taken with poison in 1968 (Collette and
MacPhee, 1969), southern-most record of this circumpolar species.
Syngnathidae - Pipefish and Seahorses
•Syngnathus
fuscus (Storer) Northern pipefish. Juvenile taking in plankton tow, early fall 1970.
Adult poisoned in tide pool by Class Aug. 1972. Juvenile dip-netted in tide
pool Aug. 1973 and 1979. Adults taken at the surface and at the bottom Aug.
1974,1975 and 1976. Two MCZ specimens (11741-2) taken by Louis Agassiz in
1862-1863.
•Hippocampus
erectus (Perry) – Lined seahorse. One adult (about 75mm TL) taken with its tail wrapped
around the line of a lobster trap in 20m off East Point Sept. 21, 1976.
Tetraodontidae – Puffers
•Sphaeroides
maculatus (Block and Schneider) – Northern puffer. An
88mm specimen was dropped by a gull near Lowell’s Beach, Oct. 1980.
Triglidae – Sea Robins
•Prionotus
carolinus (Linneaus) – Northern sea robin. One taken near Nahant by a fisherman in Nov. 1970 and
another at the Shags in May 1979. Also collected by Agassiz off Nahant.

uncommon in the rocky areas 10m or deeper. One taken with hook and line off
East Point. Taken in lobster trap near Nahant, June 1973. One taken by hand
