2000s

Kirsten Haack, AS’00, was named the communications director for Euroleague Basketball in late October. Formerly, she was the coordinator of international public relations for the National Basketball League.

Bobby “BJ” Hill, AS’00, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, began a journey of discovery that became a trek with a mission when he walked across his home state in October 2006. Hill walked the 260 miles from Williamstown, in the northwest corner of the state on the New York line, to Provincetown, on the tip of Cape Cod. An unemployed teacher when he undertook the trip (he’s now a special-education teacher in Winchester), Hill began walking about a month before the November elections, which included a hotly contested Massachusetts gubernatorial race. He brought a notebook in which he asked people he met to write something addressed to the next governor; he planned to deliver the notes personally to the election winner. On January 29, he met with Governor Deval Patrick at the State House and gave him the notebook. Hill’s blog can be found at http://www.walkacrossmass.com. As a Northeastern student, Hill studied a year abroad in Mexico at la Universidad de las Americas–Puebla. During that year’s Christmas break, he spent twelve days hiking across the country, from Coatzacoal, in Veracruz, to Salina Cruz, in Oaxaca. He has also taught English in Japan, worked as an AmeriCorps volunteer based in Denver, and served as a Red Cross volunteer in Texas after Hurricane Katrina.

Rivera writes, “I am assigned to the criminal justice division of the U.S. Army, serving as a special agent. I can’t wait to get out. Anyone have any ideas for me? I am also trained in protective services, having performed missions for the secretary of defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.”

Ari Bessendorf, AS’01, of Los Angeles, graduated in 2005 from Suffolk University Law School, where he specialized in energy and infrastructure, and interned at Cape Wind Associates. He is now an associate in the global project finance department at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCoy, a Los Angeles law firm.

Melissa Hynes, AS’01, of San Francisco, is a marketing consultant with Wells Fargo Treasury Management at the company’s corporate headquarters. Previously, she worked in software marketing for five years.

Jennifer (Kilbane) DeFronzo, L’02, of Paxton, Massachusetts, has been named a partner at Milton, Laurence & Dixon, a Worcester law firm. DeFronzo’s practice is concentrated in the areas of medical malpractice and civil litigation.

Kim Donlan, UC’02, of Newton, Massachusetts, is the vice president of marketing at OrderMotion, in Boston. She was formerly the director of marketing at Demandware, and the founder and CEO of Presension.

Chris Jarvis, E’06, of Grimsby, Ontario, has never allowed Type 1 diabetes to prevent him from participating in strenuous athletic activity. That’s the message he’s now passing along to young people who have the same disease. At Northeastern, Jarvis was a member of the rowing team (he also competed in marathons and triathlons during his college years) and rowed for Canada at the Athens Olympics. Currently, he is training with Canada’s national rowing team for a seat in either a two- or an eight-man boat at next year’s Beijing Olympics. Jarvis delivered his message of perseverance to five youths who have Type 1 diabetes when he led them on a climb to the ancient Incan city Machu Picchu, built at 7,900 feet in the Peruvian Andes. “We were looking for kids who showed potential but had a lot of struggles with diabetes,” Jarvis says of the climb. “We felt that, with our leadership, having the right attitude and taking care of things in a positive way would really allow them to just go after life.”
