Sean Cryan, AS’00, recently of Attleboro Falls, Massachusetts, is the new sports director at Bangor, Maine, television station WVII. For the past six years, Cryan worked as an assistant editor and field producer at New England Cable News, in Boston. Andrew E. Van Ostrand, AS’00, writes, “I earned my master’s degree in economic policy from Ireland’s University of Dublin (Trinity College) in 2005 and am the vice president of policy and government affairs at the Health Industry Distributors Association, in Washington, D.C. I have been living in Washington for the past seven years.” Parisa Beers, L’01, of Barrington, Rhode Island, is the new director of the state’s Consumer Protection Unit. Previously, she was Rhode Island’s special assistant attorney general and continues to work on the lead-paint litigation team. John Jacyszyn, AS’01, of Buffalo, New York, and Nicole Martin, DPharm’02, of Waltham, Massachusetts, are engaged to be married. The wedding is scheduled for September 6 in Dedham, Massachusetts. Thomas J. Karrat, BA’02, of Chatham, New Jersey, is the new executive vice president of sales and marketing at Mimeo.com, a digital printing company. Karrat previously served as senior vice president of sales at the employment website Yahoo HotJobs. Heather (Sands) Lynch, N’02, and Chris Lynch, BA’03, were married in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, on August 13, 2005. They celebrated the birth of a daughter, Erin Marie, in July 2007. Heather, a former field hockey captain, is a registered nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. Chris, a former ice hockey captain, is a commercial pilot. The family lives in Wolfeboro. Michael Moran, AS’02, married Stacy Rennell on July 7, 2007, in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Michael’s fellow journalism alums, Robert Devaney and Christian Meagher, both AS’02, served as groomsmen. The newly wedded couple honeymooned in Maya Rivera, Mexico. Michael has been a sportswriter for the Daily Hampshire Gazette, in Northampton, since 2002. Stacy graduated from Assumption College with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts in 2001, then earned a master’s degree in education with a concentration in mental-health counseling from Springfield College in 2005. The couple lives in Chicopee. James C. DeVellis, L’03, of Dorchester, Massachusetts, is a new associate at law firm Lowrie, Lando & Anastasi. He was formerly an associate at Modiano Josif Pisanty & Staub in Milan, Italy, where he focused on U.S. and European patent prosecution. Jennifer Nix, L’03, of Hamilton, New Jersey, is the director of government and policy affairs at the New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault, in Trenton. Formerly, she was a staff attorney at the Pennsylvania Health Law Project. Nix notes she is looking forward to doing broader policy and advocacy work to improve services for survivors of sexual violence in New Jersey. Kristina Blair, AS’04, formerly of Wakefield, Massachusetts, has earned a master’s in political science from American University, in Washington, D.C. She works as a legislative advocate at the National Federation of Independent Business, located in Washington. While attending American, she worked as an intern for Lynne Cheney, wife of U.S. vice president Dick Cheney. Jason Yu-Ting Chan, AS’04, of Allston, Massachusetts, graduated from the New England School of Law on May 25, 2007, and earned its Service Award, which recognizes dedication and service to the school. He was also a dean’s list student and the editor in chief of the New England Journal of International and Comparative Law. Christopher Keenan, CS’04, and Amy (Elliott) Keenan, PharmD’05, were married on September 2, 2007, in Boston. They live in Jamaica Plain. Katy Schulte, E’04, and Tom Ross, CS’04, participated in the ceremony. John Ready, BA’04, of Portland, Maine, owns a company called Catch a Piece of Maine, which allows customers to purchase a lobster trap and hire a lobsterperson to tend it, track their trap’s catch online, and have the snared lobsters sent anywhere in the continental United States. In addition, each lobster caught earns a credit, which customers can cash in for a typical Maine dinner—complete with clams, mussels, lobster, and blueberry cheesecake. Ready started the company with his brother in October 2007. Alexander R. Shmulsky, CJ’04, of Sheffield, Massachusetts, earned his juris doctorate from Albany Law School, where he was a member of the crew and the rugby team. He currently works at a Boston law firm. Peter B. Sims, GB’04, of Chicago, turned a three-month Spanish-language immersion quest into a vocation. In 2002, seeking to become fluent in Spanish, Sims spent three months studying at a school and living with a family in Costa Rica. “The experience changed my life forever,” he writes. “When I returned home, I could not stop talking about how wonderful it was. That year, I recruited five people to study Spanish in Costa Rica. Surprisingly, the owner of the school gave me a referral fee for each student I sent and said I should start a business sending people from the United States to the school. That was the birth of my language travel company, Think Abroad.” The company has expanded to offer Spanish-immersion experiences in Mexico and Spain, as well. Sims plans to travel to Shanghai and Beijing soon to explore adding courses in Mandarin Chinese. Within three years, he hopes to offer seven languages and a choice of at least fifteen countries. Mark Rappoli, BA’05, of Wilmington, Massachusetts, has been hired as a loan officer at the Salem Five Mortgage Company. Neil Tejwani, E’05, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, was one of the contestants on season four of NBC’s The Biggest Loser, which began airing in fall 2007. Sean Hopkins, AS’06, of Charlestown, Rhode Island, writes that he was selected to play Joe in the first major U.S. revival of Angels in America: Parts I and II, with Boston Theatre Works. The plays were performed in repertory at the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion in the Boston Center for the Arts, running from January 18 through February 16, 2008. Timothy Williams, BA’06, of Brighton, Massachusetts, in May became the director of public relations at Night Owl Deliveries, a concierge service that operates in both Boston and Chicago. Scott Wendricks, GB’07, of Boston, has been appointed director of medicine/ surgery for the Boston Medical Center’s nurse leadership team. Previously, he was an off-shift manager at Cambridge Health Alliance. Wendricks is also an adjunct faculty member at Northeastern’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies and UMass–Boston’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. |
