Additional dorm space on the drawing board

Northeastern is planning to build new student housing on at least one of four sites. Currently, the most likely site is a lot at the corner of Tremont and Ruggles.

The university's plan for more housing comes after fifteen months of meetings with a community task force and public officials. The task force was appointed in the wake of student raucousness after the 2004 Super Bowl as well as years of neighborhood frustration with student misbehavior, particularly in the Fenway.

Last July, Northeastern signed an agreement with the city of Boston to provide at least 1,250 new beds on campus.

Other sites being considered for new dorms include Cullinane Hall, the Gainsborough Garage, and the Boston YMCA. Though Northeastern doesn't own the YMCA building, it may be interested in buying it, and the Y may be interested in selling.

The university retreated from initial plans to build new dorms on the North and Camden parking lots after neighbors complained about those locations.
