Research funding jumps 50 percent

Fueled by its growing presence in such hot areas as biotech, nanotech, and sensing and imaging, Northeastern has seen its external research funding grow by nearly 50 percent.

Research funding rose from $47 million last fiscal year to $70 million this year, according to provost Ahmed Abdelal.

Abdelal says the increase is also a result of the university's $75 million academic investment plan, which for the past three years has helped bring in new researchers and senior academics, create endowed chairs, and establish research centers in key growth areas.

The jump in research funding is expected to boost Northeastern's national ranking in that area, which should in turn lift the university's academic reputation.
