Express Yourself

Seeing the arts as a necessary medium

Sometimes, amid all our daily concerns, it’s easy to forget how critical the arts are to our lives.

The truth is, they give us balance. As much as any other kind of learning, a knowledge of the arts and a facility for creative expression pave the way for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment, and offer us strategies for meeting social challenges. Creating, critiquing, and disseminating works of art help us understand one another, imagine new possibilities, and locate our best and truest selves.

This is why Northeastern values and encourages the development of creativity as part of its academic mission. The features in this issue give you a glimpse of the rich artistic landscape on Huntington Avenue—the works of fine art being created, the groundbreaking investigations into the inner lives of artists and intellectuals being undertaken, and the innovative ways the arts are being used to solve difficult problems.
