Balfour snags Lumina award
Northeastern's Balfour Academy has won a $97,200 grant from the Lumina Foundation for Education to enhance its programming for Boston youth.
The academy is an after-school and summer educational-enrichment program that aims to improve inner-city middle- and high-school students' access to postsecondary education.
The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation focuses on expanding access and success in education beyond high school, particularly among underserved groups.
During the summer, Balfour Academy students study core subjects, including math and English, and participate in sports and cultural events. Upperclass students sit in on Northeastern classes for six weeks and get advice on applying to college. During the school year, participants come to Northeastern for tutoring and counseling.
