Assistant Professor Thomas Starr came to N.U. in 1997. A primary interest is typography, which he calls "the essential element of graphic design." In this work, titled "The Designer Implicates Intentionally/The Reader Constructs Unwittingly," concentric wheels separate nouns, verbs, and adverbs. When one or more wheels are spun, chance creates surprising phrases. The artwork "uses the structure of language to explore gender prejudice," Starr says. He holds degrees in fine arts from Parsons School of Design and Yale University.
