Students come here to prepare for the responsibilities and opportunities found in an increasingly diverse society and an increasingly dynamic workplace.
Considering the challenges our students will face, the arts and sciences have never been more relevant. Liberal studies help students become exemplary citizens who have strong moral compasses, respect ethical complexity, understand culture and diversity, possess communication and critical-thinking skills, and know the world and their places in it.

What’s different about the new Northeastern is that we are doing away with the outdated notions that the arts and sciences are disconnected from the practical world, and that students have to choose between the arts and sciences and professional education. Today, 80 percent of our arts and sciences students participate in co-op, and seventeen of the thirty-three College of Arts and Sciences majors include practice-oriented options. We will keep working to create curricula that enable students to obtain the full benefit of a liberal education as well as opportunities to develop professional skills.
