Alchemist's delight: Neither a test tube nor a time machine, this burner from the lab of chemistry professor Rein Kirss contains a sublimation of ferrocene. Though that term sounds like the creation of a medieval alchemist, in fact the process of sublimation-which is the passage from solid form directly to vapor and back to solid again-creates a starting material from which other compounds can be derived.
