The Art of Science
Northeastern can justly claim the label of research university:
its historical strength in engineering is now complemented by the new Egan
Research Center, multiple interdisciplinary centers and institutes, and
graduate programs in all major scientific disciplines. Sponsored research
grew to $32 million in 199697, a forty-five percent increase over
the prior year. N.U. faculty hold 104 U.S. patents and publish steadily
in leading scientific and research journals.
Underlying these impressive facts and figures is the science
itself. While the experiments that take place in laboratories may sometimes
seem dry and abstract to laypersons, a photographic journey through the
university's various research facilities exhibits otherwise. The images
on the following pages spotlight a sampling of Northeastern's science.
They reveal art in abstraction, the extraordinary in the commonplace, strangeness
in applied research, and the beauty of science.
