Take a Bow!

Barry Karger, longtime director of the Barnett Institute of Chemical and Biological Analysis, was honored for his landmark work in a recent issue of the Journal of Chromatography.

Nine editors, among them NU chemistry and biomedical science professor Roger Giese, chose Karger for the honor.

"One name kept coming up; that was Barry Karger," Giese says. He adds that Karger's discoveries in the field of modern biotechnology medicine still fuel research today.

Karger holds thirty patents related to separation technology, processes that make automated analyses of DNA fragments possible at high rates of speed.

Senior computer science major Andrea Grimes has been named one of two outstanding undergraduates in the nation by the Computing Research Association.

In addition to Grimes's stellar academic record and deep commitment to helping low-income adults become tech-savvy, she was honored for designing software that identifies language patterns in biology texts.

Grimes was chosen from among hundreds of nominees who study at the nation's top universities.
