She wants her MTV. And much, much more Interviewing rock stars. Rubbing elbows with high-profile English blokes.
It was all in a day's work for senior music-industry major Emily White, who recently completed a co-op at MTV Europe's headquarters in London.
This was White's second tour of duty with MTV. In summer 2003, she worked at the cable music channel's Times Square studios in Manhattan.
At MTV Europe, White's responsibilities included helping with the production of various television spots, learning how to edit shows, and doing content research for shows. While there, she racked up an impressive list of contacts. Singer Roger Daltrey of the Who, for instance. Robert Smith of the Cure.
But forget the rock royalty. She even met Prince Charles at a concert event. "He walked right by me as he was going offstage," White says, "and asked me if I had gone deaf from sitting so close to the speakers all night. It was surreal."
White didn't just accumulate celebrity sightings in London. She says she also "learned a ton about filming, TV in general, producing, and editing."
This music lover's not particularly interested in becoming another Carson Daly, on-camera personality turned pop-culture icon. She finds she's much more fascinated with behind-the-scenes aspects of the music industry.
Before working at MTV, White covered the Bonnaroo festival for Skope magazine, and handled public relations and promotions work at Clear Channel Entertainment and Boston's rock radio station WBCN 104.1 FM.
Her most notable job, however, has been her gig as tour manager for Boston's "punk cabaret" band, the Dresden Dolls. White toured with the band last summer as they performed dates across the country. After graduation, she says, she plans to continue working with the Dolls.
