NU Press merges with publishing consortium

Northeastern University Press, the university's twenty-eight-year-old academic publishing arm, has joined the University Press of New England (UPNE), a publishing consortium whose members include Brandeis, Dartmouth, Tufts, the University of New Hampshire, and the University of Vermont.

Last spring, the university was eyeing closing the press for financial reasons. However, a faculty committee instead recommended the press join UPNE.

Becoming part of the consortium will enable the press to continue publishing books in its recognized areas of excellence—criminal justice, New England studies, ethnic studies, and women's studies.

Under the new arrangement, Northeastern faculty will work with consortium representatives on editorial decision making, and the press will continue to publish under its current imprint. The 400 Northeastern University Press titles currently in print will remain available to readers.

Northeastern's decision to join other universities under one publishing umbrella is part of a growing national trend, aimed at maintaining editorial standards while reducing production costs.
