New focus given to gender research

Northeastern's women's studies program has developed an intercollegiate component, slated to become the Institute for Critical Gender and Ethnic Studies Research.

The new effort brings a basic research element to the women's studies undergraduate minor and graduate certificate program. Research will focus on "alleviating conditions of oppressed women locally, nationally, and internationally," says Robin Chandler, women's studies program director.

Modeled after the university's Institutes on Race and Justice, and Urban Health Research, the collaboration will bring together students, faculty, and community-service providers to "help community agencies make quantitative and qualitative changes," says Chandler.

Areas of inquiry will include education, human rights, science and technology, and business and enterprise.
