Ann Sarkes, N’84, of Washington, D.C., writes, “Northeastern prepared me well for a career in professional nursing. Never in my wildest dreams did I think a BSN degree would open doors outside the clinical or administrative areas of nursing practice. After an exhilarating seven years as an occupational health nurse with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I have transferred to the Department of Homeland Security as a public healthsector specialist, working in the Infrastructure Protection Division. The job requires expertise in public health and a good deal of networking with the private sector, as well as public partnerships. I would encourage all Northeastern nursing students to continue on their path to clinical nursing while looking forward to the many opportunities a BSN degree provides. The analytical process that underlies nursing is a skill set that transfers across many applications in the arts and sciences. Nursing knowledge and skills are timeless. My Northeastern degree not only prepared me for a lifetime, it prepared me for the time of my life! Anytime a 1984 nursing classmate is in Washington, please pay a visit.” Sarkes’s e-mail address is asarkesRN@yahoo.com.
