Executive VP John Curry with band members

Putting on Their Top Hats: 1976

No, this quartet won’t get drummed out of the corps for being out of uniform. The Northeastern band is kicking off Homecoming week with its third annual Hat Day, in which band members vied at Parsons Field to be named wearer of the most sensational sombrero.

George Chmielecki, LA’80, (second from right) was crowned the chap with the sharpest chapeau. And if you’re wondering who dared flout the covered-head convention, that’s future NU president John Curry, LA’56, MEd’60, H’96, then VP for administration.

The mad hatters deserved a feather in their collective cap. The band, which was enjoying its second decade, had recently begun officially representing Northeastern at off-campus events—for instance, playing a tribute to American composers at the Prudential Center in celebration of the U.S. Bicentennial, and rousing the NU crew during the Head of the Charles Regatta.

Greater visibility was part of the band’s push for greater recognition on campus. With dozens of members joining its ranks each year, the band had already become one of the university’s largest social organizations.

Good reason for members to toot their own horns.
