Jim Murphy, N’80, of Millville, Massachusetts, writes, “After nearly twenty years of clinical nursing and nurse management in pediatrics and emergency nursing, opportunity knocked. In August 2002, I was offered a position as clinical applications manager for Liko, serving all North America. Liko designs, manufactures, and distributes patient lifting and transfer equipment worldwide. I’m responsible for clinical interface and education for health-care facilities and our distributors. Travel and clean hands, what a concept!”

Elaine Gill, CJ’81, of Melrose, Massachusetts, is the head of the twenty-member state police detective unit for the Essex County (Massachusetts) district attorney’s office. A twenty-year veteran of the state police, she is the second woman in Massachusetts history to hold such a position.

Randy Barron, MBA’82, of New York City, is the vice president of product management of MyPublisher. The company publishes hardcover digital photo books. “If someone will coordinate the effort to gather photos of our graduating class and edit the book, I will publish it for our class,” he writes. Gary Kaufman, CJ’82, of Providence, is the manager of the Rhode Island office of Ransom Environmental Consultants.

Elliot Luber, AS’82, is a media relations manager at IBM. He won a Spotlight Award from the League of American Communications Professionals for feature article writing. Luber is working toward an MBA in general management at the State University of New York’s Empire State College. He says he has plans to coauthor a book on management with his mentor, Professor Alan Belasen. Luber, his wife, Carolyn, and two sons live in his hometown of Seaford, New York.

George K. Stamas, E’82, of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, reports
that he is an environmental engineer in charge of health and safety for a worldwide polycarbonate manufacturer. “I haven’t heard from the class of group dynamics professionals with Mike Guidaino. Crawling up the fifty-foot pamper pole at graduation and playing the ‘new games’ was a very exciting time for us all,” he writes. “I like to rock climb and have even done some ice climbing in the White Mountains. Peter C. Alexander, L’83, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, is the new dean of the Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale. Alexander received his bachelor’s degree in political science and was student body president at Southern Illinois. He is the first black dean of the university’s law school. “I’m extremely excited to be returning to the school where I received my professional start,” he says. Prior to accepting the dean’s position, Alexander was a professor at the Dickinson School of Law at Pennsylvania State University. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association and last year was inducted into the American College of Bankruptcy.

Richard D. Borruso, MP’83, of Toledo, Ohio, is a pharmacist at Walgreens in Oregon, Ohio, but he’s much more than that to young Kasi Flynn and her mother. “Our pharmacy staff stopped everything when we heard a woman scream for help,” says Borruso. “Kasi, the customer’s two-year-old daughter, had stopped breathing and was turning blue in the face.” Borruso first listened for Kasi’s breathing. Hearing nothing, he began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. “I blew a few puffs of air into Kasi’s mouth and still didn’t hear anything,” he says. “So I gave her a few more puffs, and, finally, she began to breathe.”

Renardo L. “Rick” Hicks, L’83, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is a managing partner of Anderson, Gulotta, and Hicks. He focuses on utility and commercial consumer protection issues. Hicks is a former director of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Consumer Protection. Van H. Potter, E’83, of Scottsdale, Arizona, is the vice president of display products at Three-Five Systems.

Samuel Resnick, AS’83, of Sharon, Massachusetts, has opened EXIT Realty Associates in Boston. LeeAnn Solomon Christ, AS’84, of Lunenberg, Massachusetts, is the vice president and associate general counsel at Private Healthcare Systems.

Dan Collis, CJ’84, was elected sheriff of Belknap County, New Hampshire, in November. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. In 2002, he won three gold medals at the CanAm Police and Fire Games in Spokane, Washington. He and his wife, Sherri (Veit), FD’83, and sons David and Jimmy live in Laconia. Jerry Higgins, AS’84, of Raleigh, North Carolina, writes of what he describes as a “vast career change.” He resigned in October as the director of public and media relations for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League and accepted a position as the director of public relations for the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. “My boss at the seminary has a bit more clout in day-to-day affairs than my former boss at the Hurricanes, if you know what I mean,” Higgins writes. Lazaro Mitjans, CJ’84, is the new head football coach at Algonquin High School in Northboro, Massachusetts. A resident of Ashland and a trooper with the Massachusetts State Police, Mitjans started as cornerback for Northeastern from 1979 to 1982. He was a varsity assistant coach at Framingham High School for five years and was named the National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2002.

John Morosini, AS’84, of Winthrop, Massachusetts, is the human resources manager at Solectria in Woburn. He has also earned certification as a professional in human resources.

Steven M. Rothstein, MBA’84, of Brookline, Massachusetts, is the new president of the Perkins School for the Blind in Waltham. Rothstein was chosen from among a field of more than seventy-five candidates. “I’m very enthusiastic about being part of a place like Perkins because of its long and respected history. The students have such determination and courage and ability to do great things,” he says. He is a former assistant commissioner for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation; a teacher at the Boston University Graduate School of Management; and a cofounder, along with Joseph Kennedy II, of the Citizens Energy Corporation. Rothstein is married to Susan Maze-Rothstein, an administrative law judge and professor in NU’s School of Law. They have two children.

Steven Roy, AS’84, of East Kingston, New Hampshire, writes, “I am a supervisor for the U.S. Treasury at this point, but playing
in an acoustic duo (some of you might remember my guitar) gives me the greatest pleasure. Even made a CD. Hey, who knew, right? I live in New Hampshire, growing my own tomatoes, corn, peppers, and so on.”

Haddon Libby, BA’85, is the head of the Private Bank at Bank of America in the Palm Springs, California, area. He and his wife, Julia, and daughter, Isabella, live in Indian Wells. Libby bought a $2 million art collection that includes Robert Mapplethorpe, Ed Moses, Ed Ruscha, and others. He’s a member of the board of the Living Desert, a privately funded zoo that preserves desert animals and flora from around the world. His other charitable activities include the Palm Springs Desert Museum Planned Giving Board, member of the board of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and active support of the Betty Ford Center, Desert AIDS, and the La Quinta Arts Festival.

Michael P. Shaughnessy, E’85, of Hingham, Massachusetts, is a member of the board of trustees of Boston College High School. He serves as a vice president of Shaughnessy and Ahern. He and his wife, Carol, have three children— Patrick, Matthew, and Michael.

Brian F. Shea, PAH’85, of Peabody, Massachusetts, is a senior manager in the health- care consulting practice at Cap Gemini Ernst & Young. “I formerly worked in the pharmaceutical industry,” he writes. “I continue to consult and speak nationally on prevention of medication errors.” Shea is a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve Medical Services Corps. He and his wife, Maureen, have four children—twins Sara and Patrick, Julie, and Christine.

Marc Breakstone, L’86, of Lexington, Massachusetts, was recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. At Breakstone, White-Lief, and Gluck, he worked on several high-profile medical malpractice cases, including the largest settlement in state history.

Mark J. Enyedy, CJ’86, of North Andover, Massachusetts, is the vice president of business development for Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

Liz McCusker Hunt, N’86, of Hamilton, Massachusetts, writes, “Hello to all my old NU friends. Married with two kids, living in Hamilton (go figure!). Josh is seven; Ella’s three. Ralph K. Ito, PHD’86, of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, is the senior scientific director for Protedyne in Windsor, Connecticut. He has invented four products and holds a patent on each in the areas of enzyme modifications and drug design. Among his accomplishments is a lead role in the design and construction of the vascular surgery research laboratory at New England Deaconess Hospital/ Harvard Medical School.

Linda E. Massaro, BA’86, of West Hartford, Connecticut, is the director of development for Northwest Catholic High School. Reed Zars, L’86, of Laramie, Wyoming, received a 2002 Pro Bono Award from the National Law Journal. A solo practitioner, Zars takes on utility companies that are polluting the environment.

Richard Billings, MBA’87, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, is the director of U.S. equity sales in the new Boston office of Putnam Lovell NBF Securities, a subsidiary of National Bank Financial.

Timothy Ireland, MJ’87, of Lewiston, New York, received the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2002 at Niagara University, where he is an associate professor of criminal justice and chair of the department. Ireland has been a faculty member at Niagara since 1997.

Alec Kotopoulos, MBA’87, is the senior vice president and head of market research and competitive intelligence with Bank of America in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he lives. He notes that he and his wife, Marian, and twin daughters, Ally and Brook, enjoy the warmer winter.

Jeanmarie Carroll, L’88, of Boston, was named to the top-ten list for 2002 by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. She is a second assistant district attorney in Norfolk County.

Len Romano, MBA’88, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, is the president and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Denver. “The training I received in the Northeastern MBA program has provided the necessary skills to lead a diverse $20 million organization,” he writes.

Toni L. (Miller) Szabo, FD’88, and her husband, Craig, celebrated the birth of their second child, a daughter born in December 2002. They live in Mishawaka, Indiana. Szabo reports she still practices in dental hygiene.

David Wlodarski, AS’88, married Michele Olsen in Sydney, Australia, in December 2002. They live in El Paso, Texas. Wlodarski is a visiting assistant professor of theatre design and technology at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Barry Coflan, LC’89, of North Andover, Massachusetts, is working toward a master’s degree in Brandeis University’s new bioinformatics program.

Bob David, CJ’89, MBA’93, is a senior account executive at Paetec Communications in Hartford, Connecticut. He and his wife celebrated the birth of their second son, Ethan Garrett, on February 1.
