Band forming the letter "N."

"N-spiration": 1938

Teamwork was everywhere.

At the Alumni Day game against Bates College, the NU band took their motivational duties to another level. During halftime at Parsons Field, the musical “n-semble” created a formation to help mark Husky turf.

Naturally, “n-centives” also took a more melodious form. In fact, the band’s repertoire included some new toe-tappers, added after a rave response to the popular tunes played at recent games. For instance, band adviser Albert E. Whittaker had armed players with sheet music for “A-Tisket, A-Tasket” and promised to occasionally strike up other swingin’ crowd-pleasers.

Why all the fuss? No doubt coach James Dunn’s words still rang in band members’ ears. At the game’s pep rally, the coach had stressed student support as a chief attribute to success on the gridiron. A necessary reminder for students enjoying a new sport—after all, NU’s varsity eleven had been assembled just five years earlier.

In the end, our Huskies nabbed a 6-0 victory over Bates. And the locals were thrilled to the nth degree.
