An eye on the student body

As a member of the Northeastern News family from 1972 to 1977, I made a beeline for “Making the News” [May]. After reading it, however, I felt dismayed that the 1970s were bypassed. Several exciting events made the so-called Me Decade worthy of note.

Remember the streaking craze that swept college campuses in 1974? News photographers captured everything (literally), and “full frontals” ran on the front page. President Knowles was furious. Our fair and patient adviser Harvey Vetstein, whom we indeed loved and respected, scolded us for portraying the student body, as it were, as never before.

And what about the award-winning extra edition of December 3, 1976, which covered the brutal Mission Hill murder of popular education professor F. André Favat? The News found out about it before the Boston media did. The story rocked the university for weeks, raising debates about campus security.

The article accurately portrayed the students’ long hours and steadfast dedication. The sleepless nights. The dog-tired, bleary-eyed mornings. The quick catnaps on tables. By 6 a.m., smelly, cold, and hungry, we’d watch the arrival of the early-bird students who looked as fresh as daisies and think, “Wouldn’t it be nice. . . .”

From a distance

The NU News article was great. I remember my late husband and I mailing each other our college papers when we were dating so we would know what was going on at each other’s schools. The News gave much better coverage of campus activities than my college paper did. I always used to check the Crime Log to make sure he had behaved himself during the week, while we were apart.

We of good cheer

Enjoyed the “Beanie Babies” Huskiana [May] that included the “Hoy-ya, hoy-ya” cheer. I think a cheer written by Judy LeBlanc, LA’60, the cheerleading captain for 1958–1959, also deserves notice: “There ain’t no flies on us/There ain’t no flies on us/There may be flies on the other guys/But there ain’t no flies on us.”

How’s that for school spirit!
