Farewell, Charlie

Regrettably, Northeastern recently lost Charles Devlin, Ed’59, a Huntington Avenue icon and good friend to many, who died November 14. Charlie’s magnetic personality helped him earn the immediate respect of students who knew him as the class of 1970 adviser, the Student Center director (also affectionately known as the “dean of furniture”), or the dean of financial aid.

In addition, for twenty-four years Charlie ran Northeastern’s commencement ceremonies flawlessly, ensuring every student’s graduation experience was personalized and memorable.

Charlie became very dear to those of us active in the class of 1970 student government. He was always ready, willing, and able to support us, with an enthusiastic personality and a wonderful sense of humor. Not only did we see him on campus almost daily, we also had the pleasure of meeting his fine family and spending time with them at their home and at the Warren Center.

Though we are saddened by Charlie’s passing, we are much richer for having known him. He will always be in our memories as a very special person. Farewell and eternal peace, Charlie.

Let’s get real

The November issue and the enclosed alumni resource guide brought back fond memories of my time at Northeastern.

I was particularly struck by the photo of King Husky I, and the description of how in the late 1920s this worthy canine came via train from Alaska to North Station, where the university community met him with pomp and circumstance.

In my time at Northeastern, we had Mr. and Mrs. Husky, who were fun at sporting events, but possibly not as much fun as a real, live mascot might be. Though the university had a live husky mascot for sixty years, the last one, King Husky VII, died in 1989. Now, I wonder, would the school consider adopting a King Husky VIII as a new mascot?

If any fellow alumni/alumnae are interested in helping me get this project off the ground, please e-mail me at johndunn1@alumni.neu.edu.
