Jim Phelan, E'92, writes, "I graduated in '92 with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering at the age of forty-one. My earlier schooling was at the New England Conservatory as a French-horn player. My wife, Lillian Burkart, and I own and operate Burkart-Phelan. Our company is regarded as one of the top two or three in the world for the manufacture of high-quality flutes and piccolos. Our instruments are played in orchestras from Boston to Los Angeles to Osaka to Seville to São Paulo and back. This year our sales will top $1.5 million. I've also just published a book on flute acoustics and construction, The Complete Guide to the Flute. I am truly indebted to Northeastern. The rigorous engineering training has been essential in vaulting our company into the 'big leagues' in this short time span. The flexibility in scheduling allowed me to complete my degree in only three years, which was important at my age. I'm still in touch with many of the professors I had-Levendis, Hashemi, Shiffman, LoBrutto, and Zied."
