1920s
Robert E. Anderson, E'29, of Leeds, Maine, recently celebrated his
ninety-third birthday. He says he still fondly recalls his Northeastern
years. Among his favorite memories: being a member of the Sigma Delta fraternity
before it had its own house; taking classes at the YMCA and looking across
to the Opera House on Huntington Avenue; attending lectures at Jordan Hall;
and going to the bowling alley near campus. A civil engineering major,
Anderson says he still remembers a few instructors who had a profound impact
on him-Professor Byrd, who taught mechanical drawing, and Professor Gramstraph,
who taught a strength of materials course. A replica of a lighthouse Anderson
helped build on Cape Cod is still on display in a Brewster, Massachusetts,
museum.
