The group led by Prof. Yongmin Liu is dedicated to interdisciplinary research that bridges engineering, optics, applied physics and nanoscience. Our research is a synergetic integration of fundamental science, nano material/structure design, and prototype device development. We are developing novel nano optical materials and devices for various applications including next-generation optical information processing, super-resolution imaging, efficient light harvesting and ultra-sensitive biomedical detection.


Prof. Liu joined Northeastern University as an Assistant Professor in 2012, with a joint appointment in the Departments of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering. He received his Ph.D. degree in Applied Science and Technology from the University of California at Berkeley in 2009, and both his M.S. and B.S. degree in Physics from Nanjing University (Nanjing, China) in 2003 and 2000, respectively. Prof. Liu has authored and co-authored over 40 journal papers including Science, Nature, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters and Nano Letters, with an H-index of 23 and total citations over 1900 (ResearcherID). His research findings were widely reported by international media including BBC News, CNN, TIME, NBC, New York Times, etc., as well as professional magazines such as Science, Nature, Nature Photonics, Nature Nanotechnology, Scientific American, National Geographic, Optics and Photonics News.

–  The work of Graphene Plasmonic Metasurfaces to Steer Infrared Light was published in Scientific Reports.


–  The work of An Active Metamaterial Platform for Chiral Responsive Optoelectronics was published in Advanced Materials.


–  The work of Chiral Surface Waves Supported by Biaxial Hyperbolic Metamaterials was accepted by Light Science & Applications.


–  Kan Yao received NEU Graduate Thesis/Dissertation Research Grant. Congratulations!


–  Prof. Liu received AFOSR Summer Faculty Fellowship.


–  The work of Plasmonic Superpensing in Doped GaAs was published in Nano Letters.


– The invited reviewer paper on Light Manipulation with Encoded Plasmonic Nanostructures was published in EPJ Applied Metamaterials.


– Prof. Liu organized, chaired and presented in Symposium L on optical metamaterials and plasmonics in MRS 2014 Fall conference. Kan Yao presented a poster in the same symposium, which was nominated for the best poster award. Many thanks for all the speakers and participants for the success of the symposium.


– Zuojia Wang from Zhejiang University joined the group as a visiting PhD student. Welcome aboard!


– The collaborative work with Prof. Sheng Shen's group at CMU on Thermal Plasmonic Interconnects in Graphene was published in Physical Review B.


– The collaborative work with Profs. Zhida Gao and Yanyan Song on Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance under Visible Light for Photoinactivation of Bacteria was published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.
