Not all forms of “group work” are created equal. Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a specific form of collaborative learning that solves many problems that we have come to associate with traditional group-work assignments. As a result, TBL has enjoyed increased adoption in the last decade. Both teachers and students in TBL classrooms report increasing levels of student attendance, preparation, participation and critical thinking. In this workshop, we will use TBL to explore its four component practices, with special attention on how to avoid the structural flaw that causes so many traditional group work assignments to fail.
