Improving the Course Syllabus

The course syllabus is an expected and necessary part of any college course, but rarely do we reflect on it as a document: what it does and does not contain, what it conveys to students, and how it supports learning. This workshop critically examines some of the research on syllabi and then asks participants to examine sample syllabi from the perspective of students. We will discuss what a syllabus can and cannot do and what we can do to create a course syllabus that best aligns our individual teaching philosophies with the needs of our students.
