Effective Lectures, Part 1: Designing Lectures for Engaged Learning

Though often demonized as outmoded or ineffectual, lecture is perhaps the most common form of instruction in American higher education. This workshop will unpack claims around its efficacy, first by unpacking what exactly we mean when we call a class a ‘lecture,’ then considering some recent research on lecturing. Participants will share their classroom practices as we work to gather techniques that can turn the much-maligned lecture into an engaging and active learning experience for all students.
